Persuasive Writing - Purpose and Process

In persuasive or argumentative writing, try to convince others to

          agree with your facts,

          share your values,

          accept your argument and conclusions, and

          adopt your way of thinking.

 Persuasive writing utilizes logic and reason to show that one idea is more reasonable than another idea.

 It attempts to persuade a reader to adopt a certain point of view or to take a particular action.

 The argument must use sound reasoning and solid evidence by

          stating facts,

          giving logical reasons,

          using examples, and

          referencing experts.

 When planning the persuasive essays we should choose our position.

          Which side of the issue or problem will be taken, and

          What solution will be offered?

Know the purpose of the essay.

Research the topic to provide specific and convincing evidence.

Figure out what evidence to include and in what order to present the evidence.

Remember to consider the purpose, the audience, and the topic.

 Understand the opposite viewpoint and counter it by providing contrasting evidence or by finding mistakes and inconsistencies in the logic of the opposing argument.

Support your position with evidence.

Remember that the evidence must appeal to reason.

Provide examples to enhance your meaning and make your ideas concrete.
